Justifications of Saari Residence decisions

The Board of Kone Foundation does not disclose the grounds for its decisions regarding individual applications, nor does it disclose the names of the experts who evaluate the applications. The general criteria by which the funding and residence applications received by Kone Foundation are assessed include the following:

  1. Evaluations of artistic merit are based on the applicant’s research/project proposal, Curriculum Vitae and portfolio, along with the letter of recommendation accompanying the application.
  2. For each residence period efforts are made to ensure that the recipients include both Finnish and non-Finnish applicants, and younger and more established artists from a broad range of disciplines.
  3. In general, seven artists are selected for each of the four residence periods. As such, decisions are also affected by the question of which available residence period is suitable for a particular applicant.
  4. For each residence period only one recipient whose work requires the use of the artist’s studio facilities or the dance studio can be selected. All others residents generally require only writing space, with a small number requiring the woodworking shop.
